Norfolk in the southern United States orders five Konecranes hybrid RTGs
Apr 21, 2021
American Norfolk Southern Company ordered five Konecranes hybrid wheeled container gantry cranes (RTG). Two of them will be shipped to Chicago's Landers Intermodal Terminal, and the other three will be shipped to Atlanta's British-Manchester United Terminal. The order was purchased in December 2020, and the cranes will be delivered in December 2021.
The five rubber-tired container gantry cranes (RTG) ordered will be driven by hybrid power to operate on multimodal transport tracks in an ecologically efficient and environmentally friendly manner. Konecranes hybrid RTG is becoming more and more popular in the United States, and several major container terminals in the United States are highly satisfied with the operation of this type of RTG.
Among them, the container stack height of the two cranes to the Landers Intermodal Terminal is one to three, and the running span is two rails and one truck lane. The two cranes destined for the Inman United Transport Terminal have the same stacking height, and the running span is one rail and two truck lanes.
Konecranes hybrid RTG is powered by batteries and diesel generators. In normal use, it is completely powered by the battery. During peak power consumption, the battery and diesel generator provide power at the same time. The electric energy used for braking can be saved for battery charging. All five hybrid RTGs will be equipped with Konecranes' automatic steering intelligent system to keep the crane running on a pre-programmed straight path, thereby reducing the workload of the operator.
The Norfolk Southern Company began in the early days of the formation of American railroads, and its history spanned nearly two centuries. Since 2020, it has become a customer of Konecranes Group.
This order is a chapter of Konecranes Group's commitment to ecological improvement, aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of container terminal handling equipment, promoting green fingerprints, and advocating environmental protection. From ecologically optimized diesel engine drive, to hybrid power and fully electrified, we will continue to do as much as possible.
